Carmel Bunkers were before these little known places of Barcelona, but today is a spectacular space whose charm has been increasingly spreading, and, without doubt, is essential to visit it. This new “balcony” of the city of Barcelona is located inTuro de la Rovira, one of the north hills of the city, part of the Serra de Collserola, in the neighborhood of Carmel.

It was thanks to the excellent 360º view offered by this amazing point of the mountain, that this site was built in 1938 to try to protect the city from the fascist planes, following the severe bombing attack that devastated the city in February of 1937. Republicans settled there four different cannons and bunkers to defend Barcelona of possible bombings.

After the Civil War, the artillery was removed and in the gaps left by the cannons and other structures, people began to build, without development control, the populars shantytowns.

In 2006, the MUHBA (Museu d’Historia de Barcelona) began the recovery work of the place, and suitability of the museum areas, to offer a better understanding of the memory of one of the key areas of the Spanish Civil War and postwar.

Finally, in 2011, this new patrimonial place was inaugurated, offering an open outdoord space that everyone can enjoy for free.

From this viewpoint, Barcelona can be admired throughout the city in 360. From up there you can see emblematics buildings of the city like Sagrada Familia, the Agbar Tower and the Mapfre towers, and also you can see the mountains of Montjuic and Tibidabo, the geometric distribution of the Eixample district, and the harbor and the sea, stretching along all the view from one side of the viewpoint.

This spectacular point offers compelling views of the city of Barcelona, and bewitch you with the magic of the Catalan capital. And to see the sunset from the Carmel Bunkers is one of the most beautiful sights of Barcelona, as the entire city is contemplated from above .
